GRANVILLE COUNTY SCHOOLS (GCS) ONLINE CREDIT RECOVERY PROGRAM
In Partnership withIQity
Overview of the Program: This document has been created to outline the initial implementation phase of the Granville County Schools (GCS) Online Credit Recovery Program. As time is of the essence, this document details a timeline in which this program can be reasonably implemented for the remainder of the academic school year. It also puts into place potential policies and procedures that will allow a summer program to follow for students who may need to gain recovery credits for classes taken in Fall, 2009. The pilot program is focused on the high schools in Granville County. By August 2010, the GCS Online Program should be available for full implementation for the high school and middle schools within the county.
Purpose: Credit Recovery is traditionally defined as a way to “recover” credit for a course that a student was previously unsuccessful in earning academic credit towards graduation. The GCS credit recovery will be two-fold in that it will be available for students who are at risk of failing a class as well as those who have failed the class during a prior semester. The GCS credit recovery program, in general, will have a primary focus of helping students stay in school and graduate on time. Students who are currently enrolled in the class will remain in the class and use the online learning materials as a means for replacing grades that were unsatisfactory. If an End of Course test (EOC) is required for a course, the student must take the EOC at the end of the credit recovery period to receive full credit. The administration of the EOC is subject to the predetermined dates and guidelines of Granville County Schools and must be taken in a proctored environment.
Eligibility: Any student who has previously failed a course and/or who is currently at risk of failing a course needed for graduation is eligible to take an online course through GCS Credit Recovery program in partnership with Iqity. Since the Credit Recovery Program will be offered in an online learning environment, participants in the program must be self-motivated and independent learners who exhibit a strong commitment towards earning credit in an online learning environment. Students must have access to a reliable internet service provider.
Timeline: March 30th: Print a Spring 2010 failure list of the students for EOC classes such as Algebra I, Algebra II, Biology and so on.
April 1st: Send a brochure home with the students outlining general purpose of the GCS Online Credit Recovery Program.
OR
April8th: Send a brochure and letter home via mail outlining the general purpose of the GCS Online Credit Recovery Program.
NOTE:Parents/students who are interestedin the programcan attend an information/registration session about the program on April 13thor 15th(Student Led Conference night).
April 13th: Teacher training on Iqity April 19th: Classes begin online. This ensures that the student has approximately six weeks to complete the course online as a means to redeem their first nine week grade before EOC testing begins. May 31st: Classes end online.
Ideas/Action Items: ·Create a website dedicated to GCS Credit Recovery Online for informational purposes. ·Develop a brochure
Discussion Questions:
1) Who will conduct the information/registration sessions at the various high schools on the proposed dates?
2) What time should the information/registration sessions be held?
3) How do we determine/ select the teacher(s) who will be responsible for the online courses? (Of course this will be greatly driven by student enrollment.)
4) Will the classes be exclusively online or will testing be required to take place on the student’s home-base campus?
5) When and where will the online instructors be trained?
6) How do we service students who may not have access to computers/internet services, but are truly interested in taking advantage of this program?
